I haven’t done one of these in a while, though I’ve meant to. Hopefully it is a habit I can get into doing more often. And, a name for this somewhat occasional weekly series would be good as well.

Guns

Since President Obama is so opposed to guns, and the recent tragedies have further awakened his disdain for them, along with our schools being outright nutty, I thought I would share a couple of gun related articles that were recently in the news.

Do you remember when you were a seven-year old boy, and you, if you were like me, chewed your Pop-Tarts into the shape of a gun? This little boy will never forget the time he did, because he got suspended from school for this violent act.

Or, maybe you were never a seven-year old boy, but were instead a five-year old girl at some point. This young terrorist was suspended from school and sent for psychological evaluation after she started a bubble fight, threatening to shoot her peer with a Hello Kitty bubble gun. [video]

Sex

If it isn’t about guns, you know it has to be about sex or rock and roll, or homosexuality anyway.

Tony Jones, of the “emergent church,” says Christians should celebrate pre-marital sex because not doing so makes people feel guilty. And, we wouldn’t want people to be convicted about their sins, now would we? (2nd Corinthians 7:10)

While this video by Dr. Albert Mohler of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary isn’t in response to Mr. Jones, it does present what I believe is a good response to how Christians should respond to the homosexuality issue, and it is also hilarious, while being eye-opening.

A couple other things one might take from that video, don’t try to back Dr. Mohler into a corner, as he thinks better on his feet than any man, and our response must be firm and loving.

Meanwhile, another Baptist pastor, who resides in Dr. Mohler’s Louisville, got himself arrested for trespassing when he and his gay partner had a “pray in” at the courthouse when they were refused a marriage license. Reverend Stephen V. Sprinkle, Phd., who needs his title of Reverend stripped from him, wrote “Gay and Baptist: How an oxymoron could save the Church.” You know, because accepting what God hates is going to save the Church, and it is by compromise that we grow the Church, not by obedience to God, the preaching of the word, administration of the sacraments and discipline, or the Holy Spirit giving the growth.

Kids leaving the Church?:

Probably not, but we’ll play along anyway.

Compromisers, liberals, and emergents may be some of the reasons people leave the Church, but Marc at Marc5Solas has come up with a list of ten other significant reason why so many youth are leaving. I’ll give my opinion, and then the link. Kids are leaving the Church because they were never of the invisible Church to begin with, they haven’t heard the Gospel, so they have no reason to stay. Baptize them into the covenant, and raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Marc’s reasons for why the kids leave the Church.

A couple more serious posts, and then a little satire.

On Pope’s and Confessions

Dr. R. Scott Clark, who convinced me of covenant theology and paedobaptism, wrote a short article regarding Confessional Protestants and the Papacy. Whether you agree with him or not, don’t argue with him on Twitter, or you’ll end up turning into a Presbyterian. icon smile In the News

Carl R. Trueman had an amazing article on the need for confessions that ran on OPC.org recently. It is a good read, and if more churches would fall in line, we would be much better off. If you are feeling inspired, maybe the Westminster Confession of Faith would make for an edifying read this weekend.

And I end this with a video from Lutheran Satire:

Brian King, guest post

This is a guest post from Brian King. Before and After
I was restoring a set of headlights at work the other day. I thought of the parallel between the hazy headlights and the supposedly solid books I was reading that were suggested or highly praised a few years back. These books were consistent in telling me about what God wanted to do for me if I was willing to do this or that for God. I learned that God expects bold prayers and frowns at small prayers, that I could achieve my God-destiny by following certain steps, and various other nonsense. I bought it all hook, line, and sinker. I was duped. I started to realize that all of these authors seemed to be inserting themselves and/or their readers into every Biblical story or narrative. I went from confused to concerned over a matter of months because I very rarely, if ever read about the Gospel from them and always thought that every story or narrative in Scripture was pointing to or from Jesus.

I stopped reading those authors and stopped listening to their narcissistic sermons. I started reading only my Bible and praying more. I removed myself from the stories and stopped trying to find current event parallels in the Biblical narratives. WOW! I started to see and understand what is formally known as the Doctrines of Grace jumping off of every page of every book of the Bible. In these doctrines all glory goes only to Christ and His finished work on the cross.

I started looking into authors and preachers who had written or taught on these amazing doctrines. As I read and listened I was amazed by God’s love and for the first time I understood the cross as a means of substitutionary atonement for my sin. Jesus took my place on purpose! WOW! His death wasn’t to make people savable, it saved. It wasn’t to make people ransomable, it ransomed. It wasn’t to make people redeemable, it redeemed. The salvation of every single person whom the Father gave Him to save was secured! He didn’t offer me salvation and wait until I accepted it to finalize it. IT WAS FINISHED!!

I finally understood that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone.

It was so clear to me! Just like the headlights after I finished sanding and polishing.

 Before and After

Authors and pastors that I suggest avoiding due to the fact that they narcissistically insert themselves into Scripture, twist Scripture, and rarely, if ever proclaim the Gospel or teach a false prosperity gospel are:

Steven Furtick, Craig Groeschel, Perry Noble, Mark Batterson, Brian Houston, Judah Smith, Mike Bickle, Bill Johnson, Rick Warren, Christine Caine, Cindy Jacobs, Patricia King, Kerry Shook, Joseph Prince, Creflo Dollar, Joel Osteen, TD Jakes, Joyce Meyer, and many more.

Authors and preachers that I suggest reading or listening to because they consistently teach the Word and proclaim the Gospel from every passage of Scripture are:

Charles Spurgeon, Steven Lawson, R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, John Piper, Michael Horton, Kevin DeYoung, Mark Driscoll, Joe Thorn, Mark Dever, James White, John Calvin, Matt Chandler, D.A. Carson, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, David Platt, Andrew Murray, Paul Washer, Thomas Watson, Russell Moore, Francis Schaeffer, Jerry Bridges, A.W. Tozer, Jared Wilson, Martin Luther, Mike Abendroth, Phil Johnson, John Owen, Carl Trueman, Albert Mohler, Sinclair Ferguson, John Gerstner, and many others.

Take these suggestions with a grain of salt because these are my personal findings and may or may not look the same for you. I’m just a regular guy who has been completely blown away by the truths found in the doctrines of grace. I will stand firm on the Scripture in which these amazing doctrines are found and will call out anyone who is proclaiming any gospel that strays even an inch from the one true Gospel once for all delivered to the saints.

I, cc, inserted the links to the various pastors/teachers. Links are to sermons, ministries, or blogs; depending on what I could find from the particular teacher. They may not be the best links to find info or sermons from them. Some on the list are saints who have gone on to Glory, for most of them I have not linked to anything.

Apocrypha, bible, reading plan

The Bible is the best book ever written. I’m sure that is due to the fact that it was written by God, through human hands. Because it is the best book ever written, I try to read it every year, and think others would benefit by doing so as well. Wanting a little variety and preferring not to read the Gospels back to back, I came up with a Bible reading plan that is loosely based on how I read this year.

I read the Apocrypha every year as well. Though it is not Scripture, there is much gain in reading them, if one is secure in the faith and would not be misled by some of the teachings. I include the Apocryphal books that other Christian groups consider canon, and a couple that are an appendix for them.

At the bottom of the post you will find a link to a Google Document spreadsheet with the bible reading plan. The Bible Reading Plan I wrote covers 316 days, that leaves 49 days to catch up if you miss a day here and there, or once a week. The reading plan that includes the Apocrypha isn’t as luxurious with the spare days, but still includes an extra 8 days that are not accounted for, if one should fall behind.

For both plans, Old Testament books are read at four chapters per day and New Testament books at three chapters a day. Apocrypha books are four chapters per day. There are a couple small adjustments for books that are five chapters and such.

Of course, a Bible Reading Plan is far from being necessary to read the Bible, but I do personally find them useful, and I know that many others do as well. It is my hope that having this plan, or at least reading this post, will encourage others to make regular reading of the Bible into a committed daily habit.

Closet Calvinist’s Bible Reading Plan

On 3/2/13 I was informed that I had included 4th Maccabees twice on the reading plan that includes the Apocrypha. Removing the latter instance allows for 8 extra days.

Interview Questions

I’m going to be doing an interview soon. The interviewee will be a teenage girl who started an organization to sell T-shirts, for the purpose of funding a charity to pay for rape-kits to be processed and to fund anti-human trafficking campaigns.

Unfortunately, I’ve not done many interviews, and I don’t know what you want to ask her. So, what do you want me to ask?

The questions I will surely be asking:

How does your Christian faith play into this?

What lead you to this ministry? How did you come up with the idea?

How much do rape-kits cost?

Is the ministry specific to a location or region?

What else do you want me to ask?

podcasts

podcasts 273x300 PodcastsOn what seems like a daily basis, I don’t get asked what podcasts I listen to. With that in mind, I thought I would share, so if someone were to ask me, I could point them to this post.

I listen to this first group daily, or as often as they put out podcasts anyway.

Wretched Radio – A radio show that broadcasts for two hours a day, Monday through Friday, that focuses on discernment, the Gospel, how to share the Gospel, reasons for sharing the Gospel, why we should share the Gospel, … I think you get the point. They also touch on some political issues, and largely on stupidity being done in the name of relevancy.

Fighting for the Faith – Chris Rosebrough broadcasts for a couple hours, or more, Monday through Friday. His focus is on the Gospel, teaching, and discernment. He has an almost daily sermon review hour (or more) where he dissects sermons to show what makes them tick, and often times, how they went off the deep end. Once a week you’ll get a guest lecture from an expert theologian or historian. Give him a few weeks, and you’ll learn a ton.

The Briefing – Dr. Albert Mohler, President of Southern Seminary, spends 15 minutes a day sharing news stories that are likely to be of importance to Christians, and gives his thoughts on our response to them and how they will effect us. Dr. Mohler has another podcast, Thinking In Public, where he discusses books with their authors, it is worth the listen.

White Horse Inn – What could be better than four seminary professors and pastors getting together to discuss theological issues of our day and cooperatively exegete Scripture? My only issue with these guys is that they only put out one episode per week.

The next group are sermon feeds from pastors I enjoy listening to, and often get a lot out of. A common theme among them all is that they teach while they preach.

Voddie Baucham – I started listening to his sermons years ago. He has a lot to say, and he says it well. He definitely has a focus on family issues, and more importantly, he doesn’t let presuppositions effect his exegesis of the text.

Matt Chandler – He has a way of yelling “you’re stupid” at you that just really comes across loving. He definitely isn’t shy about calling people to repentance and faith for the forgiveness of their sins. I think all Christian men would do well to be influenced by this man. (Women too, of course, but men in particular.)

Steve Lawson – The Firebrand, or at least, I assume that is his nickname. Obsessed with Spurgeon, in a good way, and preaches just like him. He faithfully exegetes Scripture, and has a passion for the Gospel. He also gave this speech at the Shepherd’s Conference a few years ago.

Ron Hodel and Jeremy Rhode – These Lutheran pastors from Faith Lutheran Church preach short and to the point sermons that are theologically deep and faithfully proclaim the Law and Gospel. They also tend to post lectures from nearby Concordia Seminary. (Their Vimeo may post those more often than the podcast.)

John MacArthur – It’s John MacArthur, the Protestant Pope! How could you go wrong? This man has preached through the entire New Testament in his career. He has written more commentaries than most of us have ever read. He knows his stuff.

This group I listen to as I have time. Not that they aren’t as good, but I only have so many hours in a week and sometimes get behind.

No Compromise Radio – Mike Abendroth does an excellent job of teaching theology and tackling issues he sees in the Church and in the news. “Always biblical, always provocative, always in that order.”

Tullian Tchividjian – He preaches in hymns, it seems. Tullian’s focus recently has been fighting against legalism, showing the fullness of the Gospel. We all need the Gospel, and the Gospel is everything. (I’m also currently reading his book, “Jesus + Nothing = Everything.”)

The Dividing Line – Dr. James White, author, apologist, theologian, debater. He spends a lot of time dissecting arguments from debates, and arguing for the faith. You’ll learn a lot.

Renewing Your Mind – Dr. R.C. Sproul teaches theology and church history on this podcast. On occasion you’ll get one of his sermons as well. I just recently heard of a few of his Holy week sermons. I learned a lot, and I love Jesus more for it. I hope your experience is similar.

John Piper – Johnathon Edwards revisited? A firey preacher, he boldly proclaims the Gospel, and that our greatest desires are fulfilled in Jesus. He is very lively, very interesting, and very thoughtful.

Southern Seminary Chapel Lectures – Lectures from the chapel service of one of the top seminaries around. I don’t think there is much more to be said. Seminarians are hearing these hand picked preachers, it has to be worthwhile for us as well.

David Platt – He faithfully and boldly proclaims the Gospel, isn’t afraid to oppose the American dream, and has a focus on evangelism to the needy.

This isn’t all that I listen to, but the ones I listen to most anyway.
