While doing research for another post I came across an article about some documents that the “Traditional Southern Baptists” had put out on how to “smoke out Calvinists”

That article is worth reading, whether you have any ties to the Southern Baptist Convention or not. I am Confessional Presbyterian, though in the past I was an SBC member.

What is more tragic than these “Traditional Baptists” hatred for Calvinists, is the theology they promote. If they were Arminian, or the Baptist form of Arminianism that somehow believes in Perserverance of the Saints, I wouldn’t be so bothered by it. However, it seems that at least some of the more vocal leaders of this movement are at best semi-Pelagian, if not fully Pelagian, believing that man on his own volition can offer up a prayer at any time to be saved, and that God’s regenerating works is not necessary. This belief was condemned by the Church as a whole in 529 A.D.

The above image comes from the article linked at the beginning of my post. While some of what they said in these papers misrepresented Calvinists, this part is accurate as to what Calvinists believe. Why they chose to call Calvinistic Baptists “Extreme Calvinists” I don’t know.

“Traditional Baptists believe while we were dead in our sins, we are still able to hear, understand, and respond to the Gospel…”

Have you ever tried to talk to a corpse? Most likely you wouldn’t, because a corpse cannot hear, understand, or respond to what you are saying. A corpse cannot respond because it is dead.

It is by the work of the Holy Spirit that the man who is dead in sin is regenerated, given the gifts of repentance and faith, which he then uses to repent and believe. Without this miraculous work of God none would ever be saved.

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:1-10, ESV

With that said, I leave you with an illustration of what exactly it means to be dead, and the actual traditional beliefs of the Southern Baptist Convention from their Abstract of Principles.

Follow your heart?

heart of man, Joel Osteen

“You just gotta follow your heart”, says a Houston Texas pastor, who knows nothing of God, the Bible, or the heart of man. Though, I have no doubt that he is following his own heart.

Yesterday Joel Osteen, or more likely his intern who tweets on his behalf, tweeted this:

To fulfill your destiny, stay true to your heart. Don’t let anyone squeeze you into a mold.

Maybe it would be a good idea to compare what Osteen seems to think about the heart with what God has said about the heart of man.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? – Jeremiah 17:9

For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ – Matthew 13:15

For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. - Mark 7:21-22

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. – Romans 1:21

The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. – Genesis 8:21

This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of men, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. – Ecclesiastes 9:3

Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. – Isaiah 1:5

“None is righteous, no, not one;
no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
“Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
in their paths are ruin and misery,
and the way of peace they have not known.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” - Romans 3:10-18

Still want to trust your heart? The actions your heart lead to will earn you death. (Romans 6:23) Rather than trusting your heart, repent and trust in Christ and you will be saved.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:23

Boycott, again.

JCPenney is under pressure now from “One Million Moms,” a Christian group of women, who are angry about a lesbian woman being the new spokesperson.

GayDadsPenney 1 png 205501 Boycott, again.Actually, I take that back, they were, but One Million Moms backed down after JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson said he wasn’t going to back down. However, JCPenney has a new ad, with a male couple and their adopted children in it, and this one is bringing about similar outrage.

If we as Christians are to be about sharing the Gospel, what does this boycott do for us? Does it make sharing the Gospel with a lost and hurting world easier? Do you think Ron Johnson will suddenly want to hear the Gospel after having to deal with pressures from yet another Christian boycott? Will Ellen suddenly become straight because she knows a million mothers don’t want her to be the spokesperson for JCPenney? This episode of her show doesn’t make that seem all too promising.

By focusing on these issues we are distracting ourselves from proclaiming the Gospel, and pushing away the very people who need to hear the Gospel proclaimed. If you must boycott, at least do it for their human rights violations rather than over this.

JCP stock was down 3.96% as of close of business today (6/5/12), similar brand stocks had much smaller losses, and even one with a big gain today. The Closet Calvinist does not own any JCP stock, and does not intend to within the next 30 days.

Boycott!

boycott, Homosexuality, Sears, Starbucks

Have you heard the news? The good news? Well, or maybe not such good news. Starbucks is EVIL. Or at least some are making them out to be. Starbucks announced on January 25th (Yeah, I’m that behind.) that they would officially be supporting gay marriage. Much to the rejoice of the LGBT community, and to the vitriolic anger of some conservative Christians.

As per the usual some Christians have decided to boycott Starbucks. I think this makes the second Christian boycott of Starbucks in a year or so. The last one being when their CEO decided not to speak at Willow Creek’s leadership conference because Willow Creek says homosexuality is a sin. Interestingly enough, the CEO decided not to because of fear of a boycott from the LGBT community. (And, who knows why a church would have a leadership conference, or why a non-Christian corporate CEO would be invited to speak at one. Well, I do, but I would become angry if I delved into the topic further.)

Christians haven’t always been the majority, in fact, Christians aren’t the majority anywhere in the world except for in the US, and even being the majority here is questionable. We are at least a sizable enough group that a certain political party pretends to care about us. But, what happens when we aren’t a sizable group? Could you imagine if Christians in Iran boycotted a company, yeah all 5,000 of them. The company wouldn’t care, likely because they wouldn’t even notice.

A boycott is an act of power and aggression, used by a group to punish a person or company for an action or view that they are opposed to. I don’t think a boycott is a proper reaction from those who are called to love. If we are called to live peaceably with all people as so much as it depends on us, how can we act in mass to bully a company? Are our arguments against gay marriage so weak that we need to lower ourselves to bullying to get people to comply with our beliefs? Isn’t there a better way?

That being said, I do think there are legitimate reasons for individuals, not the Church as a whole, to not spend their money with a company. I, for one, avoid spending my money at certain monolithic department stores. Not because their stance on gay marriage, but because many of their products are made by slaves or desperately underpaid employees in third world countries. However, I think that is something individual Christians need to decide, after becoming educated on it, rather than something that needs to be preached from the pulpit. The Church is to be a Gospel people, not a political entity, and certainly not a bullying consumerist or political group.

I don’t expect that I’ll make this a regular habit. But, I just wanted to post a link in this post. It is a short post on The Gospel Coalition blog from Thabiti Anyabwile regarding James MacDonald and others inviting T. D. Jakes to debate in the Elephant Room 2 conference. I think his concern is something that most of us hadn’t thought of, and is even more troubling.
