Shane Hipps, teaching pastor at Mars Hill Bible Church in Michigan (Rob Bell‘s church) tweeted on Sunday that members of his church offered communion to a Muslim woman. Not a former Muslim who repented and trusted in Christ, but a woman who is a Muslim.*

He defended his reasoning saying that communion is a sacrament, which is a mystery, and that Mars Hill Bible Church has an “open table” where they permit anyone to take communion. He added that it is more against her religion of Islam than it is against his.

Communion is a sacrament meant for Christian believers, those who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit who have turned from their sin and trusted in Christ as Savior.

Not only are Christians not supposed to offer it to nonbelievers, but also, taking of communion when one isn’t in Christ and isn’t repentant is drinking condemnation onto themselves.

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
– 1st Corinthians 11:23-29

Maybe the church members meant well, hopefully they did. But, they invited the woman to drink judgment onto herself, making her “guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.”

And, this is the teaching pastor who doesn’t see what is made plain in the passage above. If the pastor doesn’t even know this from the bible, what is the congregation hearing? (Well, it is Rob Bell’s church, so they aren’t hearing the bible preached anyway.)

There is more to the passage above though, and for Pastor Hipps sake I hope he repents, but the passage goes on to add that taking of communion in an unworthy manner may even kill you.

For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.
– 1st Corinthians 11:29-31

Pastor Shane Hipps and Pastor Rob Bell, please repent. The false teaching in your church is atrocious, it is heretical and blasphemous. You are condemning people to hell by preaching a false gospel to them, that is no gospel at all, and now you are adding onto it by offering sickness, death, and condemnation to any foolish enough to partake in it.

Thankfully, for her sake, the Muslim woman did refuse the communion. I hope she finds a church that preaches the Gospel and that the Holy Spirit will do a work in her that she may be saved.
