Gospel, James, law, Law of God, Ten Commandments

God has blessed me with the amazing privilege of teaching junior high and high school students the bible once a week. Over the last month this opportunity has been used to expose the students to the book of James.

While grace is touted in many churches, it seems the law is often ignored. Or, at least it isn’t used for what it was meant to be used for. The law can’t make us righteous, because we can’t keep it perfectly. In fact, we can’t keep it at all.

In the book of James one is shown the law, and one is practically beat up by it, or even killed by it as the bible says, if they consider the consequences of what James has to say regarding the law. He compares the law to a mirror. We can use the law to see what we look like spiritually, just as a mirror shows us what we look like physically. Paul says elsewhere that it is by the law that we come to a knowledge of sin.

10 God Man The Law

Looking at the commandments we can see ourselves as we are before God’s eyes. We are idolaters, blasphemers, adulterers, thieves, liars, covetous, and even murderers. Lest we think we are somehow okay with some of them Jesus explained that to look upon a woman lustfully makes one guilty of adultery, and to be falsely angry with someone makes us murderers. To make matters worse, James says that to break even one of the commandments is to make us accountable for the whole law. It is clear, we are sinful, and that we have no hope of keeping the law ourselves. The bible says that we are dead in sin.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in transgressions, made us alive together with Christ. God provided the offering needed to pay for our sin and to cleanse us from it. And then He even gifts us with the faith to trust in His Son whom He provided for us.

We are nothing but sinners dead in sin, already condemned, but God provided the way out. A healthy view of the law gives us a basis to understand God’s wrath against sin, and against us, sinners. And the law helps us to understand just how much we need God’s grace and mercy to set us free.

Dr Albert Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, answers a  question about what concerns a person in college ministry should have with their students listening to Pastor Mark Driscoll? [display_podcast]

Eric Ludy* gives a pretty good, and dramatic, Gospel presentation, in this YouTube video.

Sometimes that voice in your head may not be the Holy Spirit. While Jesus did say it is better to gouge out one’s own eyes than to look at a woman with lust, I don’t think he expected us to literally do just that. This man heard a voice in his head telling him to take Jesus command literally, and did so.

A woman who strangled and killed her newborn baby has been released and will face no jail time thanks to a judge who cited support for legalized abortion in Canada, where abortions are legal and paid for at taxpayer expense.

* I’m not familar with Eric Ludy beyond this video. The video seems Arminian and may have some related issues, but overall he did a good job.

I really didn’t know what to title this post, but I think I would like to regularly put up a post with short snippets and links to full articles, I’m open to suggestions.

Pyromaniacs blog featured an open letter written by a former teacher at a Christian school in the Chicago area to pastor James MacDonald regarding the fact that the youth he saw from Harvest Bible Church didn’t seem to have heard the Gospel but loved the ice cream socials and silly games. It brought in a lot of comments with quite a bit of disagreement. Phil Johnson weighed in on it today as well.

While the Elephant Room 2 is definitely the motivation for posting the open letter, the letter is still worth looking at for those involved in youth ministry, for those who pastor a church, and for those who have children involved in a youth ministry.

I am reminded of the youth pastor who put peanut butter in his armpits for the students to lick out, the “Chee-toes” video, or of the story of the youth pastor who dressed boys in diapers and had them sit on the girl’s laps so they could feed them baby food and have them drink from a bottle, or maybe the strip Pictionary game to teach kids that they need to have boundaries. Todd Friel of Wretched Radio had a good take on it, which I’ll include below. Despite being a YouTube video it is only audio. (If anyone wants an article that discusses this more, and it does get worse, here is the link.)

Why has youth ministry turned into this? Wouldn’t the Gospel be better proclaimed to the youth by spending time proclaiming it? What happened to preaching the Gospel to the kids rather than entertaining them?

I don’t expect that I’ll make this a regular habit. But, I just wanted to post a link in this post. It is a short post on The Gospel Coalition blog from Thabiti Anyabwile regarding James MacDonald and others inviting T. D. Jakes to debate in the Elephant Room 2 conference. I think his concern is something that most of us hadn’t thought of, and is even more troubling.

This video has had some controversy going on about it. It seems that those who support abortion, or are “pro-choice” seem to have issue with being compared to some of the worst evil in the world.

Anyway, I think it should be shared. I hope you’ll watch it in full. Along with the abortion argument there is a Gospel presentation at the end.

What do you think?
